  | From "Time In Grade" To Making The Grade:
How To Build Your Next Generation Of Operators |

by: Sam Lewis & Peter Collins

Features of Extraordinary CBT

Computer-based training packages come in all shapes and sizes. Effective CBT is characterized by:

  • Technical accuracy - these programs benefit from the input and review of engineers and subject-matter experts
  • Easy-to-learn interface and navigation - controls should be intuitive and recognized with very little explanation.
  • Tight focus - lessons should have a very clear focus, and not attempt to cover too much in too little time.
  • Short study intervals - short intervals make it easy to use the courseware on shift, reducing "overtime" training.
  • Genuine user interaction - turning pages is not enough! Good CBT requires users to interact with the material.
  • Freedom to explore - Fundamentals lessons can be studied start to finish in "training mode." Or, trainees can use "research mode" to choose their own study path.
  • Appeal to a variety of learning styles - good designers recognize that people can process aural, visual and written data simultaneously. Good CBT blends sound, graphics, motion and interaction in specific ways to achieve learning objectives.
  • Graphics, graphics, graphics! - seeing how airflow in the boiler affects liquor burning makes it easy to visualize operations in ways that manuals or OJT cannot duplicate.
  • Simulation to build skills - the new generation of papermakers grew up on video games. Fundamentals lessons use games as non-threatening assessment tools.
