  | From "Time In Grade" To Making The Grade:
How To Build Your Next Generation Of Operators |

by: Sam Lewis & Peter Collins

Why Fundamentals CBT Is Effective

First and foremost, this new generation of training tools provides you with a superior vehicle for conducting training and emphasizing safety. The message is standardized. The content has been validated by engineers. The design appeals to all learning styles. The material is available 24/7.

Fundamentals CBT can be deployed immediately, eliminating the need for in-house development of this material-and eliminating updating tasks as well. There is also reduced need for instructors when you put these CBT tools to work.

These tools allow for great scheduling flexibility. In the classroom. In the control room. Individual study. Group study. On-shift. At home. Introductory training for less experienced workers. Refresher training for old pros.

Moreover, they can function as stand-alone programs, or as pre-requisite building blocks for your site-specific efforts.

CBT is efficient. Studies show that CBT users learn up to 40% faster with computer-based instruction than with more conventional methods, with greater recall of material. Trainees can proceed at their own pace, and the content is always available for review.

It's easy to see how this computer-based approach to training can help you sustain your commitment to safety, nurture skill growth, and optimize training opportunities.

But can it also cut training costs?

The answer is emphatically yes, in a number of ways:

  • Reduced trainer labor costs. Less need for instructors, material development and updating means you need fewer resources for these tasks
  • Reduced trainee labor costs. Greater efficiency (40% or more) means less trainee labor. In many mills, this translates to several thousand dollars a year in cost avoidance
  • Less overtime. CBT design makes training on shift a real possibility. Shift training means fewer sessions on days off, and less need for holding shifts over to get training done. Considerable cost savings possible
  • ROI opportunities through focused use. By focusing CBT study and follow-up activities on a topical operating problem, for example causticizing efficiency, you can often show real dollar return on your training investment
