  | From "Time In Grade" To Making The Grade:
How To Build Your Next Generation Of Operators |

by: Sam Lewis & Peter Collins

Lower costs. Better training. The tools are now available to help you achieve both.

More Innovative Training Tools
There is more to developing a training system than materials alone, and there are a number of other new tools available to help you define a training agenda, assemble needed site-specific training (on flows, controls, procedures, etc.) and deploy your system.

Needs Analysis
New strategies and electronic tools are now available to help you quickly catalog all knowledge, skill and safety requirements for area jobs, and to begin pre-developing training materials. The goal is to identify gaps between existing and needed job skills and define immediate training needs. From there you design the training agenda you need to close your knowledge and skill gaps.

In developing needs and/or task analyses, look for easy ways to catalog and retrieve information. For example, this work can yield "instant" checklists for finding locations and monitoring conditions for immediate use in the training sequence. There are also tie-ins available to job safety analysis. Analysis work can also help you specify a table of contents for the procedures needed to support operations.

Good analysis can also help you assess criticality of program content, helping you prioritize your training development based on most acute need. Often, needs analysis can help you assemble a one-year, two-year or three year plan to deploy your comprehensive system.
