Material Development Considerations

  • Goals: What are the learning and performance objectives? How will you measure success?
  • Audience Needs: Who will use the training and why? How often? How varied are the experience levels?
  • Logistics: Will training be performed on-shift, on-the-job, on overtime, or through some combination? What media is best suited to my scheduling requirements?
  • Learning Styles: Should the material appeal to a variety of learning styles? Will it allow for building job skills?
  • Updating: Is the content static or dynamic? Will I update frequently? What will be the cost of updating and maintenance?
  • Schedule: How fast do we need to begin training? What is the best initial focus if time is limited?
  • Budget: What can we afford to develop? Are there hidden costs in our approach?
  • Resources: Do I have the people, equipment, and time needed to produce accurate, useful materials?
